Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is energy deregulation?

A: In the past, one utility company provided all parts of your energy service—from the generation of energy to the transportation and distribution. The utility also billed you for your energy.

With deregulation, the retail supply of electricity and gas—that is, the actual “energy” supplied to your home or business is now opened to competition among various retailers who compete to provide better service and prices. What that means is that you can now choose your energy supplier. Deregulated retail supply includes customer service, rate plans and other customer incentive programs. When companies compete for your business, you as the consumer see the benefit through competitively priced offerings while still enjoying the same reliability that you have always enjoyed, even after you switch to a new retail supplier.

Q: Do you offer Budget Billing?

A: Stream Energy offers Budget Billing in both Texas and Georgia. A customer must establish Budget Billing when they become a Stream Energy customer. If the customer is on Budget Billing with their previous provider, they must true-up their account when they switch to Stream Energy. Depending on various factors, including season, this action may cause a credit or debit with the previous provider.

In Pennsylvania where the Utility does the billing, customers will automatically remain on Budget Billing when they switch to Stream Energy. Nothing will change for the customer.

While the Utility also does the billing in Maryland, New Jersey, and New York. Budget Billing does not carry over for the energy charges when a customer switches providers. Delivery charges however will remain on Budget Billing. Like in Texas and Georgia, the customer must true-up their account when they switch to Stream Energy. Stream Energy does not offer Budget Billing at this time in Maryland, New Jersey, or New York but would like to in the near future.

Whatever market a customer is in, they should always contact their current provider to determine how their budget plan will be impacted by switching to a new provider.

Q: Will Stream Energy offer a different product for R and RH customers?

A: At this time we only offer an R rate option but some RH customers may still find it advantageous to switch to Stream Energy depending on their personal usage pattern.

Q: Is Stream Energy competitive with the PECO RH rates?

A: Since RH rates are based on season and usage, it depends on a combination of both. Stream Energy will historically offer savings for low to average usage levels but it will depend on actual usage by season. RH customers should consider their personal usage patterns before switching to Stream Energy.
